COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS

We Use Your Vehicle's Computer To Diagnose Problems

Of all the things that can go wrong with a car electrical system, simple flaws can be the most maddening. They’re difficult to trace, seem to come and go as they please, and the symptoms often appear far from the source. Sometimes the symptoms of electrical problems don’t even seem electrical in nature.

The engine control module (ECM) controls the intersection of the engine’s necessary ingredients to make energy: fuel, air and spark. The ECM accomplishes this by constantly monitoring a vast network of sensors around the car to ensure conditions are within normal operating range. When something goes wrong, the engine control module adjusts conditions or, if it can’t, the car won’t run properly, or at all. When there is a problem, the engine control module stores a trouble code so it can be diagnosed by a technician using a scan tool.

Newer engine computer systems also feature lightweight memory systems that can be easily accessed by the technician to fix programming issues and update specifications, just like you would on your home computer. The engine control module also makes sure the car meets emissions standards, by monitoring and regulating the fuel mixture to ensure the engine isn’t running too rich and emitting excessive pollutants.

Today’s vehicles even have modules to control brakes, climate control, air bags, steering, and almost every other system on the vehicle. Some of these depend on information from the others, so finding a problem can become a very complex process. But we have the equipment and skilled technicians to diagnose and repair these complicated systems.
